At Seng Kang Primary School, our Applied Learning Programme (ALP) is designed to develop students as confident and competent communicators in internationally acceptable English. Through a structured and progressive approach to oracy, students are provided with authentic platforms to express ideas, engage audiences and communicate with purpose.

Anchored in our school vision of “Thinkers Today, Leaders Tomorrow”, the programme nurtures students to think critically, adapt creatively and respond meaningfully to real-world contexts. At the same time, it reinforces our school values of Respect, Integrity, Care and Excellence (RICE), as students learn to listen actively, collaborate with others and communicate with empathy.

SPEAK Framework

The ALP is guided by the SPEAK framework—Speak, Perform, Engage, Acknowledge and Know—which provides a clear progression for students to develop their oracy skills across levels. Through experiences such as storytelling, drama, public speaking and applied presentations, students build confidence in expressing their ideas while learning to connect meaningfully with their audience.

The ALP adopts developmental progression across levels, providing students with opportunities to build confidence and competence through experiences such as storytelling, drama, public speaking and applied presentations. These experiences are designed not only to strengthen communication skills, but also to cultivate voice, agency and a strong sense of audience awareness.

Tier 1 Structure (Progressive from P1 to P6)

ALP Tiered Pyramid

Our Applied Learning Programme (ALP) adopts a tiered approach to progressively develop students’ oracy skills and confidence in communication.

At Tier 1, all students are provided with foundational learning experiences through the curriculum. Students in Primary 1 to 3 engage in Drama, where they build confidence in expression, voice and movement. In Primary 4 to 6, the focus shifts to Public Speaking, where students learn to organise their ideas, present with clarity and engage an audience.

At Tier 2, students who demonstrate interest and aptitude are further developed through the Drama CCA (P3–P6). This platform allows them to deepen their skills in performance, collaboration and stagecraft, while strengthening their confidence and presence.

At Tier 3, selected students represent the school in external platforms and competitions, such as SYF and Spin-a-Tale. These experiences provide opportunities for students to apply their learning in authentic contexts, showcase their abilities and grow through higher levels of challenge.
